LIS to central Lisbon

Lisbon Airport sits inside the city, roughly 7 km from the centre, so the trip is short - usually 15 to 30 minutes depending on how you travel and the traffic. The Metro Red Line runs straight from the terminal, which makes the airport one of the easier European arrivals to handle on your own. The main thing to get right is your ticket and, if you take a taxi, where you queue and how the meter works.

Best defaultIf you can manage one easy change of metro line and you are not weighed down by luggage, the Metro Red Line is the cheapest, most reliable way into the centre at about 1.80 EUR plus a one-time 0.50 EUR card - otherwise take an official taxi or Bolt/Uber from the marked ranks.

Solo travellers and light packers wanting the cheapest, traffic-proof option

Follow signs from Arrivals to the 'Aeroporto' Metro station, the eastern terminus of the Red Line (Linha Vermelha). Buy a reusable Navegante / 'zapping' card from a machine (0.50 EUR for the card, then load a single fare) and tap in at the gates. For the centre (Baixa, Rossio) change at Alameda or Saldanha onto the Green or Yellow line.

Aerobus (airport shuttle)

Travellers with bags who want a direct, step-free ride to central hotels

A dedicated airport coach (often branded Aerobus / Carris airport shuttle) departs from outside Arrivals and runs to key central and waterfront stops such as Marques de Pombal, Restauradores and Cais do Sodre. Buy onboard or online; it handles luggage well and needs no line change.

Official taxi (metered)

Late arrivals, groups, or anyone who wants a door-to-door ride right now

Use the marked taxi rank outside Arrivals and take the next car in line. Insist on the meter ('tarifa' / taximetro) - never a flat quote. Expect a legitimate luggage supplement and a small airport pickup surcharge added on top of the meter, plus a higher night/weekend tariff.

Lisbon has strong app coverage. Book in the app and walk to the designated rideshare pickup zone (follow airport signage - it is not always at the taxi rank). The in-app price is fixed up front, which removes any meter or surcharge ambiguity.

Families, business arrivals, and anyone wanting a guaranteed meet-and-greet

Arrange a private car or driver in advance; they meet you in Arrivals with a name sign and carry your luggage to a fixed-price vehicle. Worth it for early flights, families, or arrivals when you simply do not want to think.

Before you go

The most common overcharge is a taxi driver offering a 'fixed price' instead of running the meter - for such a short trip the meter is almost always cheaper, so politely insist on 'taximetro'. Legitimate luggage and airport-pickup supplements are normal and posted; an unmetered round number quoted on the spot is the red flag.
The mistake most people make is queuing at the taxi rank when the Red Line metro is a few minutes' walk away and a fraction of the cost - and, separately, forgetting that the metro into the true centre usually needs one line change, so check your destination station before you tap in.
